Paris Marks 10 Years Since Deadly 2015 Terror Attacks

France today commemorated the 10th anniversary of the coordinated terrorist attacks that struck Paris on November 13, 2015, leaving 130 people dead and over 400 injured, an event that profoundly reshaped France’s security landscape and national identity.

Survivors and families of victims gathered at a newly created memorial garden near Paris City Hall, alongside French President Emmanuel Macron and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, to honor those lost. The attacks unfolded at multiple locations, beginning at the Stade de France stadium and continuing with shootings at cafes before culminating in a brutal siege at the Bataclan concert hall. “The 10th anniversary is here and emotions and tension are everywhere for us survivors,” said Arthur Denouveaux, president of victims’ association Life for Paris. “That kind of shields us from the world in a way, because we’re so focused on the grief and on remembering those who lost their lives.”

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attacks, which were carried out by nine gunmen and suicide bombers. Salim Toorabally, who prevented one of the attackers from entering the Stade de France, exemplifies the bravery shown during the crisis. Many survivors continue to grapple with the long-term effects of post-traumatic stress, with two individuals recognized as victims after later taking their own lives due to the trauma. Understanding Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is crucial in supporting those affected by such events.

A monthslong trial concluded in 2022 with the conviction of Salah Abdeslam, the lone surviving member of the attack team, who received a life sentence without parole. Denouveaux, who survived the Bataclan attack, described the lasting impact of the event, stating, “When you survive a terrorist attack … you become disconnected from the rest of the world.” Macron’s office stated the nation will continue its commitment to fighting terrorism, and Parisians were invited to place candles and flowers on the Republic Plaza and view the Eiffel Tower illuminated in the colors of the French flag.

President Macron laid wreaths at the attack sites before the memorial event, reaffirming France’s resolve to remember the victims and combat terrorism.
