Franjo von Allmen: Considering a Giant Slalom Challenge After Olympic Success

Three-time Olympic gold medalist Franjo von Allmen is considering a new challenge on the slopes, potentially adding the giant slalom to his repertoire.

“Are you already talking about the complete of my career?” Franjo von Allmen playfully asked “Sportpanorama” host Fabienne Gyr as she recounted his impressive achievements. His three Olympic victories from Milano Cortina are particularly tricky to surpass.

Von Allmen acknowledged that Stefan Rogentin had suggested retiring at the peak of his career, reasoning that improvement would be unlikely. However, the Swiss ski star assured fans, “There are still many things on the list,” indicating he isn’t considering retirement solely because of his Olympic success.

First Giant Slalom Attempt Didn’t Go as Planned

One potential avenue for a new challenge is the giant slalom. His initial attempt, however, didn’t go smoothly. Von Allmen was eliminated after just a few gates at the World Cup Finals last season in Sun Valley, USA. “At least it didn’t seize much energy,” he joked in reflection.

He is considering another start in the giant slalom at this year’s season finale in Lillehammer, Norway. Von Allmen believes a World Cup Finals appearance would be a good fit, but clarified, “It’s not currently the focus to fully commit to the giant slalom.” His priority remains consistent performance in speed disciplines and eventually winning a small crystal globe.

Von Allmen also cautioned against underestimating the additional effort required by competing in another discipline. “You travel much more and have to plan training better. It involves a lot, and there’s much more to it than people realize.”

Impressed by Odermatt

Von Allmen also expressed admiration for Marco Odermatt’s accomplishments, stating, “It’s not a given that Marco can handle it so well. It’s impressive what he delivers.” He noted that only seven male World Cup athletes have scored points in three different disciplines.

It’s certainly not the plan to fully commit now and then have it backfire.

However, Von Allmen emphasized that adding the giant slalom shouldn’t compromise his performance in other events. “It would be a balancing act. But I’d rather focus on what I know works than make hasty decisions,” he said. His coach, Reto Nydegger, echoed this sentiment: “It’s certainly not the plan to fully commit now and then have it backfire.”

For now, Von Allmen will primarily compete in speed disciplines, where he feels most comfortable. Nydegger added, “The most vital thing is that the athlete stays healthy and enjoys it. Everything else will come naturally.”
