Health officials in Västernorrland, Sweden, are launching a campaign to encourage young people to receive tested for chlamydia and gonorrhea, particularly leading up to Valentine’s Day. The initiative aims to increase testing rates, which have declined in recent years, especially among women and individuals under 25.
Although cases of chlamydia are currently decreasing in the region, gonorrhea rates have been rising, mirroring a trend seen across Sweden. Many individuals infected with sexually transmitted infections (STIs) experience no symptoms, yet remain capable of transmitting the infection to others, highlighting the importance of regular screening.
“In 2025, approximately 460 cases of chlamydia and 22 cases of gonorrhea were reported in Västernorrland,” stated Linus Sundnäs, the region’s Deputy Infection Control Physician.
“Testing for STIs has decreased for two consecutive years, particularly among girls and people under 25. We are running this campaign to raise awareness about how to get tested easily and for free.”
A survey on young people’s sexuality and relationships, involving individuals aged 16 to 29, revealed that 44 percent of respondents in Västernorrland had engaged in unprotected sex with a new or casual partner in the past year. This data underscores the need for increased STI testing and consistent condom utilize.
Smittskydd Västernorrland’s campaign emphasizes that testing is quick, simple, and safe. Residents can order a combined test for chlamydia and gonorrhea through 1177.se. The sample is collected at home and sent to the region’s laboratory for analysis. Both the test and any necessary STI treatment are provided free of charge.
The campaign will be visible on social media platforms like TikTok and Snapchat, targeting the 15-25 age group, coinciding with the approach of Valentine’s Day.
“Through the choice of channels, we want to reach young people and young adults, but everyone – regardless of age – should get tested if they have had unprotected sex with a new or casual partner. Condoms are the best way to protect yourself against STIs, but if you missed using a condom – order a test,” urged Linus Sundnäs.

Chlamydia and gonorrhea often present no symptoms, leading many individuals to unknowingly carry and spread these infections. Untreated infections can lead to complications, including fertility problems.
Common symptoms can include a burning sensation during urination or unusual discharge from the urethra, vagina, or rectum. Individuals may also experience bleeding between periods or pain in the lower abdomen or groin.
For at-home testing, a free test can be ordered via 1177.se. Alternatively, individuals can contact their healthcare center or schedule an appointment at a sexual health clinic for testing. Those aged 13–22 can submit samples at a youth clinic.
