SC Freiburg has put themselves in a commanding position to reach the Europa League semifinals following a dominant home victory over Celta Vigo. The win provides a significant advantage heading into the second leg of the quarterfinal tie, as Freiburg effectively opened the door to the next round with a comprehensive performance.

Central to Freiburg’s success was the standout display of midfield sensation Johan Manzambi. The 20-year-ancient Swiss international continues to impress with his dynamic energy and box-to-box capabilities, playing a pivotal role in the team’s control of the match. Manzambi’s influence in the center of the pitch helped secure a result that leaves the German side in a strong starting position for the return fixture.

The rise of Manzambi has been meteoric. Born in Geneva to parents from Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the right-footed midfielder transitioned from the Servette youth academy to SC Freiburg in 2023. After a stint with the reserve team, he broke into the first team in 2024, debuting on August 21 against 1. FC Heidenheim. Since then, he has become a fixture in the lineup, recording 22 appearances, 4 goals, and 2 assists during the 2025-2026 season as of April 4, 2026.

Beyond the Europa League, Manzambi has also been making waves on the international stage. Having represented Switzerland through the U18, U19, and U20 levels, he made his senior national team debut in 2025. He notched his first international goal on June 10, 2025, in a 4–0 victory over the United States, and later scored a crucial stoppage-time goal against Sweden on October 10, 2025, during a 2–0 FIFA World Cup qualifying win.

In other action, Silvan Widmer led Mainz 05 to a victory over RC Strasbourg, ensuring Mainz remains in a favorable position. Meanwhile, Manzambi’s strong form for Freiburg continues to be a focal point for fans and analysts alike as the club pushes for European glory.

With a massive lead over Vigo, Freiburg now awaits the second leg, while Manzambi’s trajectory suggests he is quickly becoming one of the Bundesliga’s most exciting young talents.
