French Man Accused of Decades of Child Abuse, Linked to Murders
A 79-year-old French man is in custody, accused of sexually abusing 89 children across at least nine countries over several decades. The case, which has shocked France, also now includes allegations of involvement in two deaths, according to reports.
The investigation began to unfold as authorities sought to map the extent of the alleged abuse, which reportedly took place over a period of decades. The man, whose name has not been widely released, allegedly targeted children in multiple countries, raising concerns about a widespread pattern of predatory behavior. According to Dutch news outlet AD.nl, authorities are working to identify and contact all victims. The alleged abuse occurred in at least nine countries, and investigators believe there may be more victims yet to be discovered.
The suspect allegedly committed the crimes while working as a surgeon in several hospitals across western and central France, beginning in the 1980s. NOS News reports that the alleged abuse often occurred before or after surgical procedures, while the children were under anesthesia. He is facing charges of rape and sexual assault.
The victims include 158 boys and 141 girls, many of whom are now adults and are expected to participate in the legal proceedings as civil parties. The trial, which is set to take place in Vannes, Brittany, is expected to last four months. If convicted, the man could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
Recent developments in the case also link the suspect to the deaths of two individuals. VRT News reported that the suspect is also being investigated for his alleged role in the deaths of a mother and a daughter.
