French agricultural tractor registrations experienced a critically important downturn in 2025, marking the second consecutive year of decline with a 14.6% drop to 33,446 units, according to data released by Axema. This decrease follows a 5.8% contraction in 2024, and is attributed to a combination of challenging market conditions and the implementation of new European braking system regulations at the start of the year. The shift prompted some pre-purchasing in late 2024, artificially inflating prior figures and exacerbating the recent decline across all tractor categories.
Agricultural tractor registrations declined sharply in 2025, falling 14.6% to 33,446 units, according to data from Axema, the French association for agricultural equipment manufacturers. This follows a 5.8% decrease in 2024, signaling continued headwinds for the sector. The downturn is attributed to broader market conditions within the agricultural equipment industry, compounded by new European regulations regarding agricultural vehicle braking systems that took effect January 1, 2025.
The regulatory changes prompted farmers to pre-register tractors and telescopic loaders at the end of 2024, artificially inflating the previous year’s numbers and contributing to the steeper decline observed in 2025.
Standard tractor registrations, accounting for 58.5% of the total volume (19,561 units), experienced a decrease of 18.5%. Specialized tractors for vineyards and orchards, representing 6.1% of the market (2,027 units), saw a 19.9% drop. Telescopic loader registrations also decreased, albeit at a more moderate rate of 7.3% (-0.4%). Registrations of tractors for green spaces also declined, falling 4.9% to 6,328 units.
