Celebrity Nutritionist Warns Against Excessive Ghee Consumption
A leading nutritionist is cautioning against the increasingly popular trend of adding ghee to every meal, citing potential health risks associated with overconsumption of the saturated fat.
Dr. Siddhant Bhargava, a well-known celebrity nutritionist, recently stated that the belief ghee is a universal health remedy has been overstated. While acknowledging ghee’s traditional use and some beneficial components like short-chain fatty acids and antioxidants, he emphasized that it remains a calorie-dense fat. One tablespoon contains approximately 120 calories, and consistent addition to multiple meals can contribute to weight gain, elevated cholesterol, and insulin resistance.
Research published by the National Institutes of Health supports moderate ghee consumption as part of a balanced diet for digestion and energy, but also highlights the risks of increased saturated fat intake and potential cardiovascular issues. A Harvard Health review further suggests replacing saturated fats with unsaturated fats like olive or mustard oil to reduce heart disease risk. This debate comes as many embrace traditional remedies without fully understanding modern nutritional science.
Dr. Bhargava clarified that ghee doesn’t directly target joints or skin as some believe, and that an anti-inflammatory diet rich in omega-3 fats is more effective for joint health. He urges people to treat ghee like any other fat – enjoying it in moderation. Excessive ghee intake can also negatively impact skin health and gut balance. Officials recommend using ghee sparingly, such as for flavoring dishes or drizzling over meals, rather than consuming it with every meal.
The nutritionist emphasized that moderation is key, as even healthy foods can become detrimental when overconsumed.
