Fruchtsaft: Krebsrisiko erhöht? Expertin warnt vor süßer Gefahr

Many people consider fruit juice a healthy alternative to soda, but new research suggests it may actually increase cancer risk. According to cancer researcher Dr. Hanna Heikenwälder, the potential health consequences of frequent juice consumption are often underestimated.

A glass of orange juice with breakfast, an apple juice at lunch, and a mango smoothie in the afternoon – this sounds like a balanced and healthy diet. However, Dr. Hanna Heikenwälder cautions that this perception may be misleading. Fruit juices, often marketed as healthy alternatives to sugary drinks, may not be as beneficial for health as many believe. The sweet beverages harbor risks that are frequently overlooked and could potentially elevate cancer risk.

Expert: Fruit Juice May Pose a Greater Cancer Risk Than Soda

Sugary drinks are already known to be problematic, and perhaps even more so than many consumers realize. Most studies don’t just look at sugar content, but at the total intake of “Sugar-Sweetened Beverages” (SSBs), which includes seemingly healthy options like flavored smoothies and sweetened iced teas.

“We intuitively suppose of soft drinks as being worse than fruit juice, but fruit juice actually performs worse when it comes to cancer risk,” explained Dr. Hanna Heikenwälder in the “Hotel Matze” podcast. Intestinal cells rapidly absorb the sugars found in these beverages, increasing metabolic stress. Researchers believe fructose, common in many juices and sweet drinks, may have even more unfavorable effects: it’s quickly converted to fat in the liver and can promote inflammation.

Many commercially available fruit juices also bear little resemblance to the original fruit. Processing methods like pressing, filtering, heating, and reconstitution often remove a significant portion of the original fiber and secondary plant compounds, leaving behind primarily concentrated sugar.

regular consumption of fruit juice has been linked to an increased risk of certain cancers, weight gain, and metabolic disorders, as cited by the German Health Portal from a recent study – with the effect increasing with dosage.

Study Highlights Risks of Processed Meats

Processed foods – particularly sausages, ham, salami, and other cured meats – and alcohol also pose significant risks. Studies clearly show that regular consumption increases cancer risk in a dose-dependent manner, particularly for colorectal cancer.

The nitrites and nitrosamines found in processed meat products are particularly problematic, as they are classified as carcinogenic. Alcohol can also increase the risk of various cancers, such as liver and esophageal cancer, through its damaging effects on mucous membranes, and metabolism.

Experts therefore advise minimizing the consumption of these products and instead focusing on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
