Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein’ Trailer Reveals Intelligent Monster, November Release Date

The first full trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s highly anticipated adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein was released today, showcasing a dramatically different take on the classic tale and confirming a theatrical release date of November 7.

The trailer centers on the perspective of the monster, played by Jacob Elordi, who delivers the chilling line, “If you will not allow me love, then I will indulge rage.” This contrasts sharply with previous portrayals, particularly the 1931 film starring Boris Karloff, and signals a closer adherence to the themes and characterization of Shelley’s 1818 novel. Scenes depict the monster’s creation during a storm, a complex relationship with Elizabeth Harlander (Mia Goth), and a pursuit across the Arctic involving his creator, Victor Frankenstein (Oscar Isaac).

Del Toro has been developing this project for over a decade, describing it as “the culmination of a journey that has occupied most of my life” at a recent Tudum event, and emphasizing his long-held fascination with monsters. The film boasts a star-studded cast including Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Christian Convery, Charles Dance, and Christoph Waltz. Del Toro’s previous literary adaptation, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, earned him his third Oscar. The enduring popularity of Frankenstein has cemented its place as a cornerstone of gothic horror and science fiction, influencing countless works of art and literature – The British Library offers a detailed history of the novel.

Netflix will handle the theatrical distribution of Frankenstein, followed by a streaming release. Studio representatives confirmed that further details regarding the film’s marketing campaign will be announced in the coming weeks.
