Geneva officials addressed growing security concerns Wednesday, March 18, 2026, ahead of the G7 summit scheduled for June 15-17 in Evian, France. The summit, held just across the border, is prompting heightened vigilance in the Swiss canton of Geneva. This comes after a period of limited public appearances by government officials, with the last press briefing occurring in December.
“These concerns are legitimate,” said Carole-Anne Kast, Geneva’s Security Councilor. “The primary objective is to ensure the safety of citizens and the cantonal territory.” Kast explained that Geneva began working in the summer of 2025 to protect its interests through a cooperation agreement between the Swiss Confederation, and France. Several bilateral meetings have taken place in both Geneva and France, with the most recent held Tuesday in Paris.
Kast was accompanied at the Paris meeting by Monica Bonfanti, commander of the cantonal police. The discussions focused on coordinating security measures and addressing potential disruptions related to the high-profile summit. The renewed focus on security preparations underscores the potential for unrest and the need for close collaboration between Switzerland and France.
