Gabriel Milito a Potential Target for River Plate Following Gallardo’s Departure

Buenos Aires – Gabriel Milito, currently managing Chivas de Guadalajara, has emerged as a candidate to take the helm at River Plate following Marcelo Gallardo’s announcement that he will step down as the club’s manager. The news has sent ripples through Argentinian football, and Chivas fans are bracing for a potential loss of their successful coach.

Gallardo, who has led River Plate to 14 titles across two stints, will manage his final match against Banfield on Thursday, February 26th. His departure has sparked a search for a replacement, and Milito’s name is prominently featured in discussions. The Argentinian coach has quickly made an impact in Liga MX, leading Chivas to six consecutive victories at the start of the Clausura 2026 season and positioning them as strong contenders for the title.

However, River Plate officials acknowledge that securing Milito’s services may prove demanding. He is currently considered one of several options, with Santiago Solari, currently with Real Madrid, also a strong contender. Other names in the mix include Hernán Crespo, manager of Sao Paulo, and Eduardo ‘Chacho’ Coudet, who coaches Deportivo Alavés. Ariel Holan and Pablo Aimar have also been mentioned as possibilities, along with Ramón Diaz.

Milito arrived at Chivas for the Apertura 2025 season and has amassed a record of 15 wins, 3 draws, and 8 losses in 26 Liga MX matches. His success has resonated with the Chivas faithful, who are hoping he will remain with the club for the long term. However, the departure of Fernando Gago to Boca Juniors last year has created a sense of unease among fans, fearing a similar scenario could unfold with Milito.

The potential move comes as Gallardo’s second tenure with River Plate comes to a close. He previously managed the club from 2014-2022, earning legendary status and a statue at the Estadio Monumental. His final match will be a significant moment for the club and its supporters.

David Faitelson, a prominent sports commentator, has already suggested that Chivas should prepare for the possibility of losing Milito to River Plate, highlighting the gravity of the situation for the Mexican club.
