Moravian-Silesian paramedics responded to nearly two dozen garden-related injuries over the weekend, including incidents where two young boys partially amputated their fingers with electric garden shears.
The surge in injuries as warmer weather arrived highlights the potential dangers of spring yard work.
Both boys, of elementary school age, required treatment and were transferred to specialized trauma care facilities, according to Lukáš Humpl, a spokesperson for the emergency medical services.
“In both cases, there was a partial separation of the finger joints,” Humpl said. “The incidents occurred independently of each other, one in the Karviná region and the other in the Frýdek-Místek area.”
In addition to the injuries involving the children, emergency crews responded to three falls from heights while people were trimming tree branches.
A middle-aged man in the Frýdek-Místek region suffered facial burns while burning branches and was transported to the Ostrava Faculty Hospital’s burn center.
Paramedics similarly treated a man with a torso injury in the Nový Jičín region after he fell onto a concrete edge while digging.
The increase in injuries underscores the importance of safety precautions when undertaking outdoor tasks.
