Gas Explosion in Banská Štiavnica Leaves Homeowner Critically Injured
A 35-year-old man is fighting for his life after a devastating gas explosion ripped through a residential home in Banská Štiavnica during the early hours of Saturday, April 11, 2026. The incident has left the victim in critical condition and the property severely damaged.
The blast occurred at approximately 4:00 a.m. According to reports from TV JOJ, the explosion was so powerful that it blew out a window in the kitchen. Neighbors were alerted to the disaster when they heard the homeowner screaming for help as he stumbled onto the street with visible burns across his body.
Emergency responders arrived quickly on the scene, where all rescue services, including police specialists, were deployed. Due to the severity and depth of the burns, medical teams placed the victim into a medically induced coma before transporting him to a specialized burn center in Ružinov, Bratislava. His condition remains extremely grave.
Preliminary details suggest the trigger for the blast may have been a simple action. According to early statements from the injured man, the explosion occurred just as he attempted to light a cigarette in the kitchen. This tragic event underscores the extreme dangers associated with gas leaks in residential settings.
Police have secured the area, cordoning off the street with tape to allow investigators to function. Initial findings by authorities indicate that a gas supply line had been disconnected behind the kitchen stove. Investigators are currently exploring several possibilities, including a technical failure or improper handling of the equipment, though they have not yet ruled out the possibility of third-party involvement.
