Satirical Lens: Gatis Šļūka’s Caricature Exhibition Opens in Daugavpils
Daugavpils has welcomed a new showcase of social commentary with the opening of a caricature exhibition by Gatis Šļūka. The event debuted on April 1, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. At the Latgale Culinary Heritage Center “Šmakovka,” located at Rīgas iela 22a.

The exhibition highlights the enduring power of the caricature as a tool for social commentary in the digital age, using irony and humor to address pressing societal issues. However, the curation has not been without tension; reports indicate that works concerning local politics were excluded from the collection, contrary to the artist’s own wishes.
A veteran of the craft, Šļūka has spent 28 years creating illustrations for the newspaper “Latvijas Avīze.” Originally from Rauna, his artistic journey began in the first grade, fueled by influences such as Disney stamps, comics, “Dadzis” magazine, and the works of Gunārs Bērziņš and Ēriks Ošs. This lifelong passion led him to earn a Master’s degree in graphic arts from the Art Academy of Latvia.
The display in Daugavpils showcases the artist’s versatility, featuring a wide array of unrelated themes that demonstrate his ability to find comedy in everyday situations. Šļūka utilizes a hybrid approach to his art, blending traditional colored pencils on paper with modern digital tools. His function, which he describes as being rooted in a Latvian and European perspective, often travels globally, sparking a sense of fulfillment in the artist that caricatures can contribute to changing the world.
Beyond his gallery work, Šļūka has published four books: “Gatis Šļūka. Karikatūras” (2006), “Gatis Šļūka. Karikatūras 2” (2015), “Gatis Šļūka. Karikatūra LV” (2018), and “Gatis Šļūka. Karikatūras 3” (2022). He has also participated in various exhibitions worldwide.
Visitors can view the caricatures in Daugavpils through August 31, 2026. While admission was free for the opening event, entry for subsequent dates will follow the institution’s standard pricing.
