The mother of actors Fernando and Cayetana Guillén-Cuervo has passed away just four months after her last public appearance in ‘La revuelta.’

Antena 3

Gemma Cuervo, an actress with a career spanning over six decades and numerous accolades, has died at the age of 91. The family communicated the news to media outlets, stating, “With immense sadness, we announce the passing of our mother, actress Gemma Cuervo, so beloved and admired by all.” They likewise announced that a viewing will be held this Sunday, March 15th, at the Tanatorio de la Paz in Tres Cantos, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Throughout her 60-year career, Cuervo became one of the most recognizable figures in Spanish acting, particularly celebrated for her work in theater. She began her stage career in 1956 with Amor de don Perlimplín con Belisa en su jardín by Federico García Lorca, and performed it for the last time 55 years later with La Celestina by Francisco de Rojas at the age of 77.

Born in Barcelona in 1934, the actress trained at the Teatro Español Universitario. She co-founded a theater company in 1969 with Fernando Guillén, whom she married in 1960 until his death in 2013. They had three children: Natalia, Fernando, and Cayetana Guillén-Cuervo. The family’s legacy in Spanish entertainment is substantial, reflecting a long history of artistic contribution.

Navigating a Career During the Franco Era

As noted by El País, one of Gemma Cuervo’s most significant roles was in El mundo sigue, directed by Fernando Fernán Gómez. The film, considered one of the director’s best, went largely unnoticed during the Franco regime. “It would have been the film that launched me. It truncated my film career. Yes, I did a lot of theater and television later, but I never repeated a leading role like that on the sizeable screen,” the actress told El País.

Her television career began in the 1950s, even predating the iconic era of Estudio 1, where Spain’s greatest performers brought world drama classics to life. However, her popularity reached new heights in the 1990s when she won over Spanish audiences with a more relatable role as the mother-in-law of Emilio Aragón in the hit series Médico de familia.

Forever Remembered as Vicenta from ‘Aquí no hay quien viva’

Gemma Cuervo’s career is remarkable, but most Spaniards will remember her for her role as Vicenta in Aquí no hay quien viva. She was the last surviving neighbor from floors 1A and 1B, following the deaths of Mariví Bilbao (Marisa) and Emma Penella (Concha). The show remains a beloved staple of Spanish television.

In an interview with FormulaTV after receiving the Max Award for lifetime achievement, Cuervo fondly recalled her time on the Antena 3 series and noted how it marked a period in her life. The role of Vicenta allowed her to connect with an audience that hadn’t previously been familiar with her work. “Affection, in general, is life itself for me, and the public’s affection is my entire professional life,” she said.

Gemma Cuervo was an example of how to succeed in a world that was often hostile towards women. “They would say: ‘Here comes Gemma Cuervo…! She was extremely warrior-like. I still am. Women have to help each other, pave the way, build it our own, not have it made for us so we fall,” she said in an interview with El País, “Biting my tongue, no. Speaking up as much as I could, yes.”
