Geneva International Book Fair to Showcase Literary Portraits, Piaf Exhibit, and Interactive Comics
The 2026 Geneva International Book Fair, running from March 18th to March 22nd at Palexpo, will offer more than just author meet-and-greets and literary discussions. The event is set to immerse attendees in a diverse range of artistic experiences, bridging literature with photography, comics, and interactive exhibits. This year’s fair promises a unique exploration of the creative process, appealing to a broad audience.
Among the highlights is “Portraits d’écrivains,” an exhibition dedicated to the work of Franco-Swiss photographer Yves Debraine (1925-2011). A passionate devotee of literature, Debraine collaborated with numerous Swiss and international publications throughout his career. Known for his close relationships with figures like Charlie Chaplin and Georges Simenon, Debraine also captured iconic images of 20th-century literary giants, including Vladimir Nabokov, Albert Cohen, John le Carré, and Ella Maillart. The black-and-white portraits, created between the 1950s and 1990s, offer a glimpse into the lives and creative spaces of these celebrated authors.
The fair will also celebrate the legacy of Édith Piaf with an exhibit titled “Édith Piaf, une vie en scène et en Suisse” (Edith Piaf, a Life on Stage and in Switzerland). The iconic French singer had a significant connection to Switzerland, beginning in 1946, frequently performing there and seeking respite in the country, often in the company of Jean Cocteau. The exhibition will feature photographs by Hugues Vassal, a friend of Piaf, alongside archival audio from Radio Télévision Suisse (RTS), including press articles, interviews, concert recordings, and even recordings of a disc. The project was developed in collaboration with Solène Vassal, Éditions Cabédita, and RTS.
Beyond these featured exhibits, the Geneva International Book Fair will also present “L’ombre d’un rêve,” an exhibition by Swiss photographer Yann Becker. Currently based in Osaka, Becker will share a documentary perspective on contemporary Japan through portraits and scenes of everyday life. The fair’s diverse programming aims to provide visitors with new ways to engage with books and the art of creation.
The 40th edition of the Salon du Livre promises five days of literary engagement for readers, writers, publishers, and booksellers alike. The event is poised to be a significant cultural moment, showcasing the power of storytelling in various forms.
