George Russell of Mercedes secured a commanding victory at the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday, marking a significant start to the 2026 Formula 1 season. He finished ahead of teammate Kimi Antonelli and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in a thrilling race at Melbourne’s Grand Prix Circuit.
The race weekend began with drama as Oscar Piastri was forced to withdraw before the start due to a crash during the reconnaissance lap. Nico Hulkenberg also faced a setback, unable to start the race due to a technical issue with his car during the installation lap.
Leclerc, starting from fourth on the grid, made a blistering start to seize the lead on the first lap. Russell, who claimed pole position, dropped to second, with Lewis Hamilton following closely in third after starting seventh.

Russell briefly overtook Leclerc on the second lap, but the Ferrari driver quickly regained the lead on the following lap. The battle continued, with Russell once again passing Leclerc on lap eight, only to be overtaken again on the same lap.
A virtual safety car was deployed on lap 11 after Isack Hadjar was forced to retire due to engine trouble, bringing smoke onto the track. By lap 12, the Ferrari duo had moved into the top two positions after Russell made his pit stop.
Leclerc made his pit stop on lap 25, handing the lead to Hamilton. The Mercedes pair of Russell and Antonelli were close behind.
Russell overtook Hamilton on lap 28, as Leclerc then entered the pits. Antonelli moved into second place, with Leclerc in third. Hamilton rejoined the race in fourth.
The order remained unchanged through to the finish line. Russell’s win marked his first of the season and his sixth overall since joining Mercedes in 2022. This victory is a strong statement for Mercedes early in the championship.
Defending champion Lando Norris finished fifth, holding off a strong drive from Max Verstappen, who climbed from a 20th-place start.
Oliver Bearman secured seventh place, even as Arvid Lindblad impressed on his Formula 1 debut, scoring points with an eighth-place finish. Gabriel Bortoleto finished ninth, earning Audi their first points of the season, and Pierre Gasly rounded out the top ten.
The second round of the 2026 F1 season will take place at the Chinese Grand Prix on Sunday, March 15th, followed by the Japanese Grand Prix two weeks later.
