Geraldine Kemper on RTL Exit & Presenter Fears

Dutch television personality Geraldine Kemper has confirmed her departure from RTL, signaling potential shifts for other female presenters at the network. The news comes amid a surge in competition-based reality shows in the Netherlands.

Kemper revealed that her contract with RTL ended a year ago, in 2024, after an initial five-year agreement. “Balen,” she stated, expressing her disappointment. “It’s a bummer, I’m not going to lie. And it makes me insecure, because being affiliated with a broadcaster is nice and safe.”

The presenter, who rose to prominence through the BNN program Sterretje Gezocht, joined RTL in 2019. Though, her time with the network included a program that didn’t find success, Geraldine and the Women, as well as appearances on shows like Five Days Inside, The Voice, Big Brother, and Expeditie Robinson. MediaCourant reports that this relatively limited output over five years may have contributed to the decision not to renew her contract.

Looking ahead, Kemper described her current situation as “happy single,” comparing it to previous long-term roles with BNN and RTL. She acknowledged the changing landscape of the television industry, noting increased opportunities for creators to diversify their income streams.

According to De Telegraaf, media expert Tina Nijkamp warns that the abundance of new competition formats – twelve are slated to debut in April alone – could lead to instability for other female presenters at RTL. The proliferation of these shows is described as “unprecedented.”

Kemper’s departure follows her recent world travels, a move that was initially unconfirmed by both parties. The news adds to a growing conversation about the evolving dynamics within Dutch television and the challenges facing presenters in a rapidly changing media environment.
