A heated exchange has erupted between the owners of Bordeaux and Guingamp, stemming from an outstanding transfer fee and escalating into a public dispute over financial responsibility. Gérard Lopez, the owner of Bordeaux, recently criticized the president of Guingamp, Frédéric Legrand, accusing him of speaking without taking risks, while also questioning his financial investment in French football.

Legrand swiftly responded to Lopez, asserting that he has no time for lectures from someone who hasn’t contributed financially to the sport. “I have no lessons to receive from this gentleman,” Legrand told L’Equipe. “I am here, clearly, to defend the interests of my club. I’ve been with En-Avant for 41 years, 25 of them as a volunteer. So, I understand the value of money.”

The core of the dispute centers around a €400,000 payment Bordeaux still owes Guingamp as part of a transfer agreement. Legrand emphasized the importance of fulfilling financial obligations, stating, “When you make purchases, you pay your suppliers. This gentleman currently owes 3.6 million euros to three French clubs. Bordeaux owes us 400,000 euros, representing the last of three agreed-upon installments. When you owe someone money, you pay. Otherwise, you don’t bring it up.”

Legrand also took aim at Lopez’s communication style, describing him as aloof and unapproachable. “He was the only president in Ligue 2 at the time who didn’t speak to anyone. Even when we went to his stadium, he would barely acknowledge us at the start of the match and then disappear.” The back-and-forth highlights the ongoing tensions within French football and the challenges clubs face in managing finances and maintaining positive relationships.
