Giant Cylinder Mystery: Japan Road Disruption

A massive steel cylinder unexpectedly emerged from the ground in Osaka, Japan, on March 11, 2026, disrupting traffic and prompting an investigation by local authorities. The incident highlights the challenges of aging infrastructure in major cities and the potential for unexpected disruptions during routine construction work.

The structure, described as being approximately 3.5 meters in diameter and initially reaching a height of 13 meters – roughly the height of a four-story building – appeared during excavation for sewer work in the Kita ward of Osaka. Officials received a report about the cylinder on Wednesday morning, noting it had not been present the previous day, according to reports from 20 Minutes and La Presse.

Authorities determined the cylinder was a steel casing used for soil stabilization. Workers were able to reduce its height to approximately 1.6 meters on Friday morning by pouring water inside to weigh it down, officials said.

The unexpected appearance of the cylinder led to the closure of two nearby roads leading towards the city center, causing significant congestion. One road reopened on Friday afternoon, and authorities anticipate the remaining closure will be lifted soon, with plans to cut away the exposed portion of the structure. “We are still investigating the cause of the incident,” a city official stated, as reported by Sud Ouest.

The incident comes after a similar event last year near Tokyo, where a massive sinkhole swallowed a truck and its driver, drawing attention to the risks associated with aging infrastructure throughout Japan.
