Sony Santa Monica Studio, the developer behind the critically acclaimed God of War franchise, is expanding the universe with a new IP, according to details that surfaced from a former writer’s LinkedIn profile. The project, which has been in development for several years, is described as a new franchise within the established God of War world, signaling a potential broadening of the series beyond Kratos’s story. This move reflects a wider industry trend of building interconnected gaming universes, similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“Contributed to shaping the narrative vision and creative direction of a new franchise within the God of War universe at Sony Santa Monica Studio, developing characters, storylines, and original lore that expanded the acclaimed intellectual property. Integrated narrative into gameplay and world-building through writing and narrative content, collaborating with various areas to deliver compelling experiences for a global audience. Contributed to long-term narrative and franchise strategy.”

The development aligns with previous reporting by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, who indicated that PlayStation had plans to support multiple God of War sequels and spin-offs. Schreier also noted that a previously planned live service game developed by Bluepoint Games was canceled after being rejected by FromSoftware.

Rumors suggest that the new franchise may draw inspiration from Egyptian mythology. Industry insider Tom Henderson previously reported that the game could feature Kratos wielding a Khopesh, a curved sword historically used in ancient Egypt. Further fueling speculation, dataminers discovered a hidden cutscene within God of War Ragnarok that strongly points to Egypt as a potential setting.

Although the project is described as a new franchise within the God of War universe, it remains unclear whether Kratos and Atreus will be the central characters. The studio may opt to introduce new protagonists to lead the narrative. Actor Christopher Judge, who voices Kratos, recently indicated that an announcement regarding Santa Monica Studio’s next game is expected around the end of the summer.
