Santa Monica Studio has released a code allowing players to access the roguelike mode, The Pit of Agonies, in God of War: Sons of Sparta ahead of schedule. The move comes after fan requests for earlier access to the challenging endgame content.
Previously, The Pit was only accessible after completing the game’s main story. Now, players can unlock it early by entering a specific sequence of inputs on their DualSense controller in the starting menu:
- Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, L1, R1, Touchpad
Entering this code will add a new option to the game’s menu, granting access to The Pit of Agonies. This roguelike mode offers a distinct experience from the main game, featuring different enemies and reward pools with each playthrough. The addition of a dedicated roguelike mode demonstrates a growing trend in game development to extend player engagement beyond the core narrative.
The Pit can be played solo as Kratos, or in two-player local co-op with Kratos and Deimos. The game also introduces “Agonies,” difficulty modifiers that add variety to each run. For example, “the Agony of Torment will manifest healing vessels that must be destroyed to prevent enemies from regenerating health, even as the Agony of Calamity will cause defeated enemies to burst into a fiery explosion.”
Players receive a Symbol of Suffering for each Agony completed during a run. Accumulating these symbols unlocks new Agonies and achieving certain thresholds grants Ashes of Agony, which provide permanent upgrades that carry over between attempts. This progression system encourages repeated playthroughs and strategic experimentation.
