Google Meet Update: Enhanced Control & Bot Protection

Google has rolled out an update for Meet designed to give meeting hosts more control over who can join a session. The update introduces two separate queues: one for potentially risky participants, such as bots and another for confirmed users. By default, requests from potentially risky participants are automatically denied, while confirmed users are admitted directly.

Google recently released an update for Meet that strengthens control over meeting attendees. The update focuses on the “knocking” feature, which allows participants to request permission to join an ongoing meeting – a process that can be challenging for hosts, particularly in large groups. The new functionality distinguishes between safe and potentially risky participants.

The new bot-security feature is part of a broader series of Workspace improvements. Google previously released an update that automatically links Meet messages to Google Chat for seamless post-meeting communication.

Two Queues

Google explains that the update introduces two separate queues for people requesting to join. The first queue contains requests from those Google considers a “potential risk,” such as bots. Hosts must manually review these requests before admitting anyone. The default setting is to automatically deny, with the host able to manually intervene to allow access.

The second queue is for confirmed users – individuals who have been invited to the meeting or belong to the host’s organization. This group is automatically admitted by default. When faced with a high volume of requests, hosts can open an overview and either admit or deny everyone with a single click.

In February 2026, Google also improved the audit logs for Meet participation permissions. The company stated at the time that the type of permission with which someone entered a meeting would now be recorded in the audit events.

Rollout for Google Workspace Customers

The update is now available to Workspace customers in the Rapid Release domain. These domains receive new features and updates immediately or shortly after release, often favored by organizations prioritizing innovation. Those in the Scheduled Release domain will need to wait until April 7, 2026.

Administrators can check their release track via admin.google.com. The active domain under ‘new features’ can be found via account, account settings, preferences. Switching between the different domains is possible from the same screen.
