Google is rolling out a series of updates to its Messages app, currently in various stages of A/B testing, meaning wider availability of these features will occur over time. The updates include enhancements to message organization, security, and fraud protection, according to recent reports and observations of the app.
Among the features still being tested is a trash folder, which will allow users to recover deleted chats for up to 30 days. This feature is currently being rolled out to users through account settings. Google is also experimenting with “smart replies” that automatically populate the text box with suggested responses, offering users a quick way to reply and then further edit before sending.
Recently Launched Features
Users can now share their real-time location with others via Google Maps directly within Messages. The feature allows for sharing a static map link with options to share for “one hour,” “today,” “until turned off,” or a “custom time.” Once sent, the map expands to fill more of the screen. This feature builds on Google’s broader integration of location services and aims to simplify sharing plans with contacts.
The design of read receipts in Messages has also been updated, now appearing in the bottom right corner of message bubbles. Tapping the receipt reveals a timestamp and encryption lock icon, and allows for a direct reply. The updated read receipts have been widely available in both test and stable versions since their initial debut in August 2024.
Enhanced Fraud Protection
Google has implemented new fraud detection capabilities powered by Gemini, designed to better identify scams such as job offer fraud and sophisticated romance scams. These scams often rely on gradual manipulation and lack obvious warning signs, requiring advanced detection methods. The update signals Google’s commitment to user safety in the face of increasingly complex online threats.
The RCS editing history feature has also been re-released, allowing users to long-press on edited messages to view details of the changes. Other recent updates to Messages include a redesigned chat interface, spam link detection, and the ability for users to customize group chat icons.
