Google has launched Nano Banana 2, a new image generation model combining the advanced capabilities of Nano Banana Pro with the speed of Gemini Flash. The rollout, announced on February 26, 2026, aims to make high-quality, rapid image generation more accessible across Google products like the Gemini app and Google Search.

According to a Google DeepMind blog post, Nano Banana 2 delivers advanced world knowledge, production-ready specifications and subject consistency at a significantly faster pace. This speed is achieved by integrating Gemini Flash, enabling quicker editing and iteration based on user prompts.

The new model offers enhanced creative control, maintaining character resemblance for up to five characters and the fidelity of up to ten objects within a single workflow. This feature is particularly useful for creating storyboards and visual narratives, as detailed in a Google Workspace update. Nano Banana 2 can also follow precise instructions for complex requests and generate images with resolutions up to 4K, boasting richer textures and sharper details.

Google is also bolstering its efforts to identify AI-generated content with improvements to SynthID technology and the implementation of C2PA Content Credentials. This move comes as AI-generated imagery becomes increasingly realistic, raising concerns about authenticity and potential misuse, as noted in the Google DeepMind announcement.

The launch of Nano Banana 2 will see the previous Nano Banana model replaced across the Fast, Thinking, and Pro models for Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and personal Google account holders aged 18 and over who apply the Gemini app. Workspace users who previously had access to Nano Banana Pro will retain that access for specialized tasks.

Nano Banana 2 will develop into the default model in Search for AI Mode and Lens, as well as in Google’s Flow AI creative studio. Engadget reports that the model is powered by Gemini 3.1 Flash Image. The update signals growing competition in the rapidly evolving AI image generation sector.

The company highlighted Nano Banana 2’s ability to generate texts on images for marketing materials and greeting cards, and to pull real-time information and images from web searches to create infographics and diagrams. This capability, previously exclusive to Nano Banana Pro, expands the potential applications of the technology.
