Forget dinner and a movie – in Gothenburg, Sweden, they’re bringing the cinema to the pizza. The Göteborg Film Festival is taking a unique approach to film viewing this year, screening a selection of short films at three local pizzerias.
The innovative concept, dubbed “Tio minuter, en kvart” (Ten Minutes, a Quarter), aims to introduce more people to the art of short filmmaking. According to Annie Karlsson, head of the festival’s short film program, the goal is to “play with the meeting between pizza and film culture, and see what happens when the film festival takes place in a slightly more unexpected space in the city.”
Three pizzerias have been chosen to participate out of Gothenburg’s 350 total, and will showcase curated selections of short films to their customers. Yusuf Yalcin, owner of Pizzeria Pomodoro, is already preparing for the influx of moviegoers. “We know how to make pizza, but now we’ll learn how to pop popcorn too,” he said.
The four films selected for the pizzeria screenings are each ten to fifteen minutes long and will have their official premiere in the Swedish Shorts section during the festival’s opening weekend. The festival’s move to embrace unconventional venues reflects a broader trend in the film industry to reach audiences where they are.
