Mikie Sherrill Elected First Female Democratic Governor of New Jersey

Mikie Sherrill made history yesterday, November 5, 2025, becoming the first female Democratic governor of New Jersey after a decisive victory in Tuesday’s election.

Sherrill, a four-term member of Congress, former Navy helicopter pilot, and prosecutor, met with current Governor Phil Murphy in Trenton today to begin discussing the transition of power. “New Jersey feels like the center of it all and I’m really excited for what we have coming up,” Sherrill stated. Her win represents a significant shift in the state’s political landscape and could influence future policy decisions regarding economic development and education.

The governor-elect defeated Republican Jack Ciattarelli, who received an endorsement from former President Donald Trump. Throughout her campaign, Sherrill frequently criticized Republican policies, attributing voter concerns about the economy to the current administration. “Given how poor the economy under this administration is doing, I think we see 22 states in recession,” Sherrill said in a recent interview. She plans to focus on improving education, specifically by reallocating funds from school administrations to enhance third-grade reading scores and support teachers – a key promise made during her campaign. Voters expressed hope that Sherrill will address affordability concerns and follow through on her campaign pledges. “I hope every elected official is up for the task, it doesn’t matter what party, as long as they’re trying to do their best for the community,” said one resident of Hoboken. Sherrill is now preparing to outline her full agenda for the state, with a focus on economic revitalization and educational reform, as detailed in her campaign platform.
