OpenAI unveiled GPT-5.4 on March 10, 2026, a new model geared toward professional applications. It is being rolled out within ChatGPT as “GPT-5.4 Thinking,” as well as through the API and Codex. A GPT-5.4 Pro version is also available for users seeking peak performance on complex tasks.
According to the company, GPT-5.4 combines several recent advancements in reasoning, code generation, and workflow automation. The model notably integrates the programming capabilities introduced with GPT-5.3-Codex, while also improving its interaction with software tools and work environments such as spreadsheets, presentations, and documents. This move underscores OpenAI’s commitment to providing AI tools that seamlessly integrate into existing professional workflows.
Within ChatGPT, the GPT-5.4 Thinking mode now displays a preview of the model’s reasoning process during response generation. The goal is to allow users to adjust their instructions mid-process, achieving results more closely aligned with their expectations without extensive back-and-forth. OpenAI also stated that the model enhances in-depth web research and context management for tasks requiring extended reasoning.
Codex Now Available on Windows
OpenAI also announced the release of a Windows application for the Codex AI coding tool. The company says this version is designed to integrate with enterprise development environments and includes native sandboxing functions and workflow management mechanisms. Developers can now run multiple agents asynchronously on different projects, automate repetitive tasks, and connect these agents to tools or processes via a “skills” system.
OpenAI indicated that Codex now has more than 1.6 million weekly active users, a user base that has tripled in one year. This Windows release follows the recent launch of the desktop application for macOS. The growing adoption of Codex reflects the increasing demand for AI-powered coding assistance among developers.
