Greater Lansing Football Stars Shine in MHSAA Playoff Openers

Several Greater Lansing area high school football players delivered standout performances during the opening week of the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) playoffs, as reported by area coaches.

East Lansing’s BJ Ardister showcased his dual-threat ability, completing 10 of 16 passes for 179 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 111 yards and another score. DeWitt dominated Owosso with a 70-13 victory, fueled by Lucas Brandell’s two interception returns for touchdowns and Traverse Moore’s impressive showing of 180 rushing yards and three touchdowns, plus a passing touchdown on 3-of-3 attempts. These early playoff wins set the stage for deeper runs in the tournament.

Other notable performances included Charlie Dutcher of Haslett, who threw for 199 yards and two touchdowns, and Gibson Rondy of Ithaca, who passed for 218 yards and a touchdown while adding a rushing score in a win over previously undefeated Saginaw Valley Lutheran. Williamston’s Joe Smith led the Hornets with 211 rushing yards and four touchdowns in a 47-6 win over Sexton, and Portland’s Nolan Zbytowski contributed 78 rushing yards, two scores, and a 79-yard touchdown reception in a comeback overtime victory against Grand Rapids South Christian. Stat leaders for the week included Rondy with 218 passing yards, Smith with 211 rushing yards, and Neveon Yarbrough of East Lansing with 131 receiving yards.
