Two men, ages 22 and 30, sustained minor injuries in a stabbing incident Sunday on Gideonweg in Groningen, according to local reports. The incident, even as not life-threatening, underscores a recent uptick in reported assaults within the city.
Emergency medical personnel treated both victims at the scene. One of the men was transported to a hospital for further evaluation, authorities said.
Police quickly apprehended a suspect following the stabbing. Details regarding the suspect’s identity and potential charges have not yet been released.
Gideonweg is located in the city of Groningen, in the Netherlands. The area has seen increased development in recent years, transitioning from industrial uses to a mix of businesses and residential areas, as detailed in a historical overview of the Gideon neighborhood.
The area is also home to a temporary shelter for asylum seekers, located on Gideonweg near the Antwerperbrug, currently housing approximately 140 people, as reported by the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA). It is currently unknown if the incident is related to the shelter.
