Research on IBD and Celiac Disease
Karl Mårild’s research focuses on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and celiac disease, two chronic conditions affecting many patients and requiring ongoing monitoring and treatment. These conditions can significantly impact quality of life, making research into their causes and management crucial.
“I conduct epidemiological and clinical studies on IBD and celiac disease, using Nordic, national, or regional databases. We are trying to identify risk factors, particularly those that can be influenced and may form the basis for preventing these diseases. We also study prognosis, follow-up, and treatment,” he explained.
“We want to understand who develops the disease, how the patient is doing, and how they can best be treated and monitored in healthcare.”
Strong Research Environment in the Field
Mårild highlighted Sweden’s strong tradition in research on gastrointestinal diseases.
“Sweden has strong research groups in gastroenterology, both clinically and preclinically. IBD and celiac disease are also common chronic conditions that affect many people—both patients and healthcare professionals. That’s what drew me to these areas.”
The Award Opens New Opportunities
The Rising Star award is not only a recognition of his work, but also creates new opportunities for Mårild in the future.
“It really gives me energy to continue and opens up new collaborations within European gastroenterological research.”
