Atlético Madrid delivered a dominant performance Tuesday night, defeating Tottenham Hotspur 5-2 in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 matchup.

The match at the Metropolitano Stadium was a whirlwind of action, marked by early goals and a commanding display from the home side, with Slovakian international Dávid Hancko playing a key role in the victory.

Atlético raced to a 4-0 lead by the 22nd minute, ultimately securing a significant advantage heading into the second leg.

Hancko completed the full 90 minutes at center-back, contributing to both defensive solidity and attacking moves, achieving an impressive 89 percent passing accuracy.

“He had to deal with [Aston] Villa’s Moussa Diaby in open space. It was a difficult match in that regard for the Slovakian, but he gradually became a reassuring presence,” wrote Carlos Fernández of Marca, describing Hancko’s performance. “Whenever Atlético are under pressure when building from the back, number 17 brings order to the play.”

He is a certainty

“He was very focused on aerial balls. The Slovak plays at the pace required in European football. Atlético haven’t found a center-back like Hancko in a long time. He defends, he gets involved in the attack,” Fernández added.

Positive assessments also came from other Spanish media outlets.

“Very safe with the ball at his feet, almost flawless in his passing, even with long balls. He even dared to make runs with the ball and almost won a penalty on one of them. He is a certainty,” assessed Jesús Colino of AS.

Spanish media described the first half at the Metropolitano as historic.

It was a half filled with gifts from the opposition, slips, and a goalkeeper change for Tottenham after just 17 minutes, as Atlético took a commanding 4-0 lead within the first twenty minutes.

Blessed Madness

Football always delivers new and unexpected stories – that’s its greatness – but rarely have we seen anything like what unfolded in the first half. Atlético capitalized on gifts from the English side, easing their path toward progression against the Premier League team.

“Many had to rub their eyes to believe what was happening on the pitch. Blessed madness, irresistible madness from Atlético,” wrote AS.

The match was also significantly impacted by errors from Tottenham goalkeeper Antonín Kinský, who was substituted off after just 17 minutes following a series of mistakes.

A Series of Catastrophic Misfortunes

“Those who don’t believe in bad luck, curses, bad karma, misfortune, or fate should appear at what happened at the Metropolitano Stadium in the match between Atlético Madrid and Tottenham in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16,” wrote Chema Fuente of Mundo Deportivo.

“What happened in the first fifteen minutes of the match was – as the classic would say – a series of catastrophic misfortunes for the English team. Just looking at Tottenham on the Metropolitana pitch made it clear why, despite a star-studded squad, they are just one point above the relegation zone. It’s almost impossible to experience so much bad luck in such a short time. Incredible.”

Atlético coach Diego Simeone emphasized after the match that his team was able to force the opponent into mistakes and quickly capitalize on them.

“I liked the team. We forced the opponent to make mistakes, and they happened. That gave us confidence, and we took a significant lead in the first half,” the coach said.

“They scored their goal after one of our mistakes. Now we will enjoy this victory, but the Champions League is a very demanding competition, and no result guarantees you progression,” Simeone added.

Asked about the story of the Czech goalkeeper:

“I have never seen anything like that on a professional level. It’s not my problem, but the problem of their coach and goalkeeper. We focus on ourselves, not on the decisions of others,” the Atlético coach said.
