The World Championships are the final major event of the short track speed skating season, and the competition in Montreal is underway. Here’s an update on how the Belgian team is performing.

Tough Break for Hanne Desmet

Just weeks after a disappointing Winter Olympics, Hanne Desmet’s World Championships have gotten off to a difficult start. The defending champion in the 1,000 meters was disqualified in the heats.

The Belgian skater finished first in her heat, but was penalized for making contact with a Polish competitor during an overtaking maneuver. A repeat title is now out of reach following the disqualification.

Desmet was as well disqualified on her preferred distance at the Winter Olympics, in the semi-finals.

Mirthe Michielsen and Tineke den Dulk will get another chance, having both finished third in their respective heats. Stijn Desmet also advanced, winning his heat.

Desmet was penalized for contact during a race.

Stijn and Hanne Desmet Advance to 1,500m Semifinals

Hanne and Stijn Desmet had a strong start to the World Championships in Montreal. In the morning session on the first day, Hanne won her 1,500-meter heat. Stijn finished second in the same event, behind Canadian William Dandjinou. Both skaters have qualified for the semifinals.

Tineke den Dulk and Ward Pétré will compete in the repechage after finishing fourth in their heats. The 500 meters, 1,000 meters, and relay races are also scheduled for today.
