Hans Spekman: New FNV Leader Warns on Pension Support | Netherlands News

Amsterdam – Hans Spekman has been appointed the new chairman of the Dutch trade union federation, FNV, effective May 1st, coinciding with International Workers’ Day. The appointment follows adjustments to the organization’s governance structure and aims to bring stability to the FNV as it advocates for workers across the Netherlands.

Spekman, a former PvdA politician, will lead a renewed board tasked with strengthening the FNV’s position on key labor issues. The FNV represents workers, benefit recipients, and pensioners, and will continue to fight for improved working conditions, greater job security, and the preservation of social welfare programs, according to the organization.

“We stand firmly for workers, those entitled to benefits, and pensioners,” Spekman stated. “We will fight together on the shop floor and in The Hague for good working conditions, more security, and against the dismantling of social schemes. Workers are the engine of our economy. We are one, we are together, and we are many. And we will ensure our voice is heard.”

The new FNV board consists of nine members. Nine Kooiman, currently chairman of the NPB, has been named vice-chairman. Other members include Ahmed Kansouh, David van de Geer, Diemer Kransen, Hendrik Noten, Jacqie van Stigt, Joosje de Lang, and Lieke Smits.

Spekman has already signaled his intent to actively engage with the government on critical social security matters, particularly regarding the state pension (AOW). He cautioned that any plans concerning the AOW require broad societal and political support to succeed. This stance underscores the FNV’s commitment to closely monitoring government proposals and prioritizing consultation and consensus-building.

The appointment comes after a period of internal restructuring within the FNV, and the organization emphasizes the need to rebuild its strength and relevance in the current economic climate. The FNV believes that recognizing the value of workers and ensuring fair compensation are crucial for a healthy economy.

“People deserve respect, a decent income, and healthy and safe work,” Spekman added. “Security is not a luxury, but a prerequisite for progress. This applies to employees, people receiving benefits, and pensioners. Workers are not a cost item, but form the basis of our economy.”
