Swiss Regional Broadcaster Canal9 Highlights Community Impact in Valais
Canal9 | Kanal9, Switzerland’s oldest regional television station, continues to emphasize its commitment to public service by producing content that focuses on community support and personal growth, such as helping others through life experience.
Operating out of Sierre in the Valais region, the media outlet serves as a vital information hub, delivering daily news and specialized magazines. To ensure accessibility across linguistic lines, the broadcaster maintains two distinct channels, providing dedicated programming in both French and German. This bilingual approach underscores the importance of preserving regional identity within a linguistically diverse landscape.
The organization’s roots date back to the summer of 1973, when it was first envisioned by Marc Biderbost of the Association sierroise de loisirs et culture (ASLEC). It was formally established in 1984 by the Jeune chambre internationale de Sierre under the original name “Sierre Canal9.” The station’s subsequent expansion in 2002, which brought its broadcast to the entire French-speaking portion of Valais, highlights the increasing demand for localized, community-centric journalism.
Now headquartered at Technopôle 2 in Sierre, the broadcaster produces a wide array of programming, including segments on health, culture, architecture, and entertainment. This diverse content strategy aligns with the station’s long-standing slogan, “Proche de vous” (Close to you), reflecting its mission to remain deeply embedded in the lives of its viewers.
As of April 8, 2026, the station remains accessible through a variety of digital and cable platforms, including Swisscom TV, Sunrise TV, Zattoo, and TeleBoy, as well as cable networks such as Cablecom, Naxoo, and Net+.
