Six Dead in Mexico After ‘Vitamin Drip’ Treatments at Hermosillo Clinic

A medical investigation is underway in Hermosillo, Sonora, after at least six people died following the administration of intravenous “vitamin drips” at a private clinic. Authorities are currently probing allegations of medical negligence and malpractice linked to the treatments.

The victims were treated at the Medicina Biológica Regenerativa Celular clinic, located in the Jesús García neighborhood. According to the Secretary of Health, the treatments—marketed as “vitamin drips” for wellness, detoxification and recovery from jet lag or hangovers—were prescribed, mixed, and administered by a single physician, identified as 65-year-aged Jesús Maximiano N.

While six deaths have been confirmed, officials report that one additional patient remains hospitalized in grave condition, and two others have been discharged. In total, nine suspected cases related to the treatment have emerged over the past week, as detailed in reports from El País and La Jornada.

The Fiscalía General de Justicia del Estado de Sonora (FGJES) has opened six separate investigation files following formal complaints. As part of the inquiry, investigators raided the clinic and seized clinical records and bottled medical solutions. The case highlights the potential dangers of unregulated intravenous therapies that bypass strict medical oversight.

To determine the cause of death, the FGJES is conducting histopathological analyses of tissue samples from the deceased to identify cellular damage. Simultaneously, the Agencia Ministerial de Investigación Criminal (AMIC) has transported seized medications and substances under strict chain of custody to Mexico City. These materials are being evaluated by the Comisión Federal para la Protección contra Riesgos Sanitarios (COFEPRIS) and the Comisión de Control Analítico y Ampliación de Cobertura (CCAYAC) to check for contaminants or unauthorized substances.

Among the identified victims are Jesús Almeida Flores, his son Sebastián Almeida, 38-year-old Catalina Figueroa, 22-year-old Zahid Alberto Castro Lagarda, and Dinora N. Other reports mention victims identified as Héctor N and Jesús N.

Health Secretary José Luis Alomía Zegarra noted that the physician involved has been practicing since 2004 and possesses valid official documentation. The investigation continues to determine whether the deaths were the result of contaminated solutions or medical malpractice.
