“That’s my family. Those are the people that affect you the most, take up the most space naturally as a human who’s born into something,” Duff told the outlet. “Just because you’re born into a family doesn’t mean that it always stays together.”
The actress acknowledged having “a very complicated life” and revealed that her parents, Bob and Susan, also share a “very complicated thing,” referencing their divorce in 2008.
“I know it’s not rare, and I think it goes back to the theme of, Why share now?” she stated. “I guess I just felt ready.”
Duff explores these themes on her new album, with the track “We Don’t Talk” appearing to address her estrangement from Haylie.
She explained that she felt compelled to share these experiences, adding, “I felt like people have definitely gone through some of the similar large strokes that I have in the past 10 to 15 years.”
Duff and her sister have largely remained out of the public eye together since before the pandemic, with limited interaction on social media. Bob Duff faced legal issues in 2008, briefly being jailed for contempt of court related to the sale of family assets during the couple’s divorce proceedings.
