South Moravia‘s regional council has approved a $18.8 million (184 million Czech crowns) plan to fully restore a gallery building in Hodonín designed by architect Antonín Blažek. The extensive reconstruction, slated to begin in 2026, aims to address critical structural deficiencies-including a leaking roof and lack of climate control-that threaten the gallery’s collection and limit its ability to host traveling exhibitions. Beyond preservation, the project will also modernize the facility and add a unique performance space by opening access to the building’s currently unused attic.

South Moravia’s regional council has approved plans for a comprehensive reconstruction of a gallery building designed by architect Antonín Blažek. The project, slated to begin with preparatory work next year and construction in 2027, aims to address significant structural issues and modernize the cultural institution.

The renovation is crucial not only for building improvements but also for preserving a vital piece of cultural heritage and ensuring visitor safety, according to František Lukl, the regional governor’s deputy responsible for culture and heritage preservation. “The current state of the building prevents us from borrowing quality artworks and providing services at the level that one of Hodonín’s most significant architectural structures deserves,” Lukl said.

The regional government will fund the $18.8 million (184 million Czech crowns) restoration through a loan. The gallery, located on Úprkova Street in Hodonín, has long suffered from serious structural problems. “The damaged facade, moisture in the basement, uneven floors in the exhibition spaces, and especially the leaking roof, all threaten valuable collection items,” said regional spokesperson Martina Žídková.

A lack of climate control is also a critical concern. “Temperatures in the gallery fluctuate from 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit) in winter to 32 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit) in summer, making it impossible to meet standards for the protection of artworks,” Žídková explained.

Access to the Attic

The extensive reconstruction will include addressing moisture issues, repairing the facade, replacing the roof, and making the building fully accessible. A modern climate control system will also be installed, and the garden will be revitalized. The basement will be repurposed for educational activities and visitor amenities, according to David Grund, the regional councilor for investments.

A particularly interesting element of the plan is the proposed opening of the attic space, which could become an alternative exhibition and cultural venue with a capacity of 60 to 80 people for concerts and other events. “Access will be provided by an elevator and a staircase separate from the main gallery operations,” Grund said. “The goal of the reconstruction is to create a modern cultural institution that respects the historical value of the building while offering visitors a comfortable environment and professional protection for the gallery’s collections, meeting international standards.”

Hodonín, Czech Republic – A significant investment is planned to revitalize a historically important gallery building in South Moravia, addressing years of neglect and ensuring its future as a modern cultural hub. The project underscores the region’s commitment to preserving its architectural heritage while enhancing its cultural offerings.
