Hong Kong Drug Prevention: Campaign Fails & New Initiatives

Hong Kong is facing a public relations challenge after a drug prevention poster featuring actor Frankie Lam and singer-songwriter Hins Cheung sparked controversy for its suggestive imagery. The poster, intended to promote a “Stand Firm” anti-drug campaign, quickly went viral for unintended reasons, with many online users interpreting the pose as referencing drug use.

According to reports, the Security Bureau swiftly removed the poster on the evening of March 18, 2026, following the widespread backlash. The campaign features the slogan “齊企硬Capture嘢” which translates to “Stand Firm, Don’t Take Drugs,” but the visual execution proved problematic.

The incident comes as Hong Kong authorities reported a 2% decrease in overall reported drug use in 2025. Despite the decline, officials are continuing efforts to combat drug abuse through public awareness campaigns.

In a separate initiative, Hong Kong actor and singer Aaron Kwok led a youth dance event on March 18, 2026, as part of the “Stand Firm” campaign. Kwok and the young participants demonstrated dance moves aligned with the campaign’s message of resisting temptation and building a drug-free community. Images from the event showcase the energetic performance and the campaign’s message.

The Security Bureau similarly released behind-the-scenes footage of the anti-drug campaign, highlighting the dedication and passion of those involved. The bureau shared the footage to demonstrate the commitment of those working to prevent drug abuse.

This campaign is the latest effort by Hong Kong authorities to address drug-related issues and promote a healthy lifestyle among its citizens. The incident with the poster serves as a reminder of the importance of careful consideration in public messaging, particularly when tackling sensitive topics.
