Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee visited residents temporarily housed at the Kai Tak Youth Hostel on Friday, February 13, 2026, following a recent fire at the Marco Fort Estate. He assured residents that the government is working to finalize a long-term resettlement plan, with details expected to be announced shortly.

Lee emphasized that a task force is continuing its work throughout the Lunar New Year holiday to develop a solution that meets the needs of those affected by the fire. “I have told them that I have asked the task force not to stop working during the Lunar New Year, to work tirelessly, and to try to approach up with a plan that can handle all residents as soon as possible,” Lee said, according to reports.

The Kai Tak Youth Hostel, originally built as a quarantine facility, has been repurposed to provide accommodation for young people and those displaced by the Marco Fort fire. Lee noted the hostel features amenities like a skate park and pickleball courts, designed to cater to the diverse needs of its residents. He also highlighted the hostel’s cultural and sporting events, which have previously hosted youth exchanges with international visitors.

During his visit, Lee spoke with two elderly residents, both in their 70s, who expressed satisfaction with the hostel’s facilities, including the double units and shared kitchen and living areas. Residents also shared their opinions regarding long-term housing arrangements. The government faces challenges in rebuilding Marco Fort, including developing a phased plan to address the needs of different families, resolving insurance and legal issues, and avoiding potential lawsuits that could delay the process, Lee explained.

According to TVB News, Lee stated that the task force is analyzing feedback from affected families and aims to release the long-term resettlement plan in the near future. The situation underscores the ongoing challenges of providing adequate housing and support for residents displaced by unforeseen circumstances.

Lee also announced that all bureau directors will be visiting local communities before the Lunar New Year to understand citizens’ needs and explain relevant policies. A community dinner was recently held for residents, fostering a sense of togetherness following the fire, Hong Kong Wenhui Network reported.
