A man in his 40s was apprehended Wednesday evening after a more than 12-hour standoff with police in Bergen, Norway, following reports of gunfire. The incident, which unfolded in the Hordvik neighborhood of Åsane, prompted a large-scale response and has left residents shaken.

Police initiated the operation after receiving initial reports of a shooting around 6:30 PM local time on February 19, 2026, and ultimately took the suspect into custody around 12:30 AM on February 20, 2026. The lengthy operation was described by authorities as “exceptionally complicated and risky.”

“The person showed no signs of following police instructions. He appeared unstable,” said Kjetil Øyri, a chief of staff with the Vest Police District, during a press conference Thursday. Authorities confirmed the suspect possessed multiple firearms, as well as a bow and arrow.

Between 50 and 60 officers were involved in the operation, according to police. The suspect, who has not been publicly identified, was hospitalized following his arrest and is now facing charges. He is currently being investigated for making threats and discharging a firearm in a populated area.

The home where the suspect barricaded himself was subsequently engulfed in flames during the apprehension. By Thursday morning, the structure was completely destroyed, leaving only remnants of a chimney and charred debris. Investigators are now combing through the scene, documenting numerous bullet holes found in the surrounding area, including on a parking sign and a van parked nearby.

According to early reports, the suspect is an active member of a shooting club and legally owned several powerful weapons. He also has a prior record, including convictions for driving under the influence and a minor drug offense. Neighbors have described him as a quiet individual who enjoyed hunting and spending time alone in the mountains. One neighbor recalled playing with the suspect as children but admitted they had little contact in recent years.

Police are continuing their investigation into the incident, and a court hearing to determine whether to detain the suspect is scheduled for Friday. The case highlights the challenges law enforcement faces when dealing with individuals exhibiting unstable behavior and possessing access to firearms.

The police operation took 12.5 hours from the first report of the shooting to the suspect’s arrest.
