Housemarque’s ‘Saros’ Goes Gold: New Trailer and Early Impressions Hint at a PS5 Powerhouse
Housemarque has officially announced that development for its upcoming action title, Saros, is complete. The studio confirmed that the game has attained “gold” status, signaling that the master build is finished and ready for distribution ahead of its scheduled launch on April 30, 2026. This milestone follows a rigorous development cycle that the studio has now successfully concluded.

The announcement coincides with the release of a new trailer that provides a first look at the game’s intensity, sparking immediate conversation among industry critics. Early journalist reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, with some already suggesting the title is a serious contender for Game of the Year due to its promise of epic, high-stakes action. The footage emphasizes the intense “bullet hell” mechanics that have become a hallmark of Housemarque’s design philosophy.
Set on the planet Carcosa under an ominous eclipse, Saros tells the haunting story of a lost off-world colony. Players step into the role of Arjun Devraj, a powerful Soltari Enforcer voiced by Rahul Kohli. The narrative is described by Creative Director Gregory Louden as an emotional character study exploring the cost of forging a new future. To piece together the planet’s tragic history, players must locate Soltari Holograms scattered across the environment.
From a gameplay perspective, Saros is a third-person action experience that blends shooter and roguelike elements. A standout feature is the Soltari Shield, which allows Devraj to block attacks and absorb projectile energy; this energy can then be discharged via “Carcosan Power Weapons” to eliminate hostiles. In a significant departure from the mechanics seen in Returnal, Saros introduces permanent resources and progression. This system allows players to permanently upgrade their loadout, including suit parts and weapons, ensuring that every death contributes to the player’s ability to “come back stronger.” This shift toward persistent growth suggests a broader strategic move to balance extreme challenge with a more rewarding sense of long-term advancement.
The project represents a major investment for Housemarque, with a budget totaling tens of millions of euros. Developed using Unreal Engine 5, the game is designed to push the PlayStation 5 hardware to its limits. The development process was supported by Sony Interactive Entertainment, which acquired the Finland-based studio in July 2021, as well as Nixxes Software, PlayStation Studios Creative Arts, and XDev. The atmospheric experience is further bolstered by a score composed by Sam Slater.
