Natural Light Exposure May Help Regulate Blood Sugar, Study Suggests

Exposure to natural light during the day may improve blood sugar control, particularly for individuals with type 2 diabetes, according to recent research. Maintaining stable blood sugar levels is a key component of managing diabetes and overall health and this finding highlights a potentially accessible way to support metabolic function.

Researchers at Maastricht University in the Netherlands investigated the effects of natural light exposure on individuals with type 2 diabetes. The study, involving 13 participants with an average age of 70, found that spending 4.5 days in a room with ample natural light – through large windows between 8am and 5pm – appeared to have a positive impact on blood sugar levels. Participants continued to take their usual diabetes medications throughout the study.

During the study period, participants engaged in typical daily activities, such as using phones and computers with screens set to low brightness. Evenings were spent with dim artificial light, and participants slept in complete darkness. They consumed three similar meals each day, designed to maintain their weight, and completed the same exercises at fixed times.

The findings align with previous research indicating that exposure to artificial light at night can disrupt circadian rhythms, which are 24-hour cycles that regulate metabolic activity, including blood sugar levels. Disruptions to these rhythms can lead to metabolic dysfunction, increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes. Studies have shown that spending time in sunlight can enhance the body’s response to insulin, a hormone crucial for regulating blood sugar.

While the study focused on indoor exposure to natural light, research suggests that simply sitting by a window can be beneficial. What we have is particularly relevant, as most people spend the majority of their time indoors.

Experts emphasize that natural light exposure should not be considered a replacement for medication, dietary changes, or physical activity. However, it can be a valuable component of a comprehensive approach to managing blood sugar and supporting overall metabolic health. Daily exposure to sunlight can help regulate the circadian rhythm, influencing sleep quality, insulin sensitivity, appetite, and glucose control.
