NC State Fairgoers Advised to Pace Themselves for Optimal Digestion
Raleigh, NC – Tens of thousands attending the North Carolina State Fair are being offered advice from health professionals on how to enjoy the traditional fair foods without significant digestive discomfort.
UNC Health Registered Dietitian Shelly Wegman recommends prioritizing protein early in the day to promote fullness and navigating the “big three” – fat, salt, and sugar – strategically. “The really heavy, battered foods or in cheesy sauces – those are the foods that are going to be a major fat bomb and that will probably upset your stomach at some point,” Wegman warned. She also cautioned against immediately indulging in high-carb treats like funnel cakes, explaining they can lead to a rapid blood sugar spike and subsequent crash, encouraging continued overeating.
Hydration is also key, with Wegman advising fairgoers to bring a refillable water bottle and drink frequently. Mindful eating – slowing down, chewing thoroughly, and pausing between bites – can also help, as it takes approximately 15 minutes for the stomach to signal fullness to the brain. Interestingly, attempting to “fast before the fair” is counterproductive, as it can lead to uncomfortable stomach stretching when a large volume of food is suddenly introduced. For families, managing portion sizes, especially for children, is crucial; a full corn dog or fried Twinkie is often far too much for a child’s portion. You can find more information about healthy eating habits from the MyPlate guidelines.
Wegman emphasized the importance of sharing treats and savoring favorite foods, and noted that while probiotics can be beneficial, they require consistent consumption over several weeks to have a noticeable effect. The North Carolina State Fair is a significant economic driver for the region, and ensuring attendees can enjoy the experience comfortably is a priority.
Officials encourage fairgoers to listen to their bodies and prioritize moderation throughout the day.
