Human Trafficking Network Dismantled in Europe

A large-scale human trafficking operation, suspected of smuggling over 100,000 migrants, has been dismantled across Europe, authorities announced Tuesday, March 10, 2026. The network facilitated the illegal movement of people from Turkey to Germany, primarily through Southeastern Europe and Austria, between the fall of 2023 and May 2025.

The operation, which involved a highly organized structure, generated more than one billion euros in illicit profits, according to police. Investigations revealed the network was comprised of five separate, autonomous sub-organizations, each utilizing up to 80 individuals to carry out the smuggling.

More than 130 people have been arrested in connection with the trafficking ring since 2023, with the majority of arrests occurring in Austria. Additional arrests were made in Croatia, Romania, Germany, and other European countries, officials said.

Authorities identified six key suspects – men aged 25 to 50 from Afghanistan, Syria, and Russia – who are currently being held in Vienna, and Budapest. These individuals were reportedly recruited through social media platforms.

The dismantling of this network highlights the ongoing challenges European nations face in combating organized crime and managing migration flows. The scale of the operation suggests a sophisticated and well-funded criminal enterprise exploiting vulnerable individuals seeking to reach Europe.

The investigation, which began in 2023, uncovered a network operating along the Balkan route. TVA Nouvelles reported the network originated with a Syrian clan and included several hundred members. Le Figaro detailed the extensive reach of the operation and the significant financial gains made by those involved. Ouest-France confirmed the arrests made by Austrian police.
