A right-leaning opposition party in Hungary, Tisza, has widened its lead over the ruling Fidesz party of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, according to the latest polling data. The shift in momentum comes as Hungary prepares for parliamentary elections on April 12.

The upcoming vote presents a significant challenge for Orbán, who has held power for 16 years and is now facing a strong competitor. The outcome of the election is expected to have repercussions not only for Hungary but also for the broader European political landscape, particularly for far-right movements.

Recent surveys indicate a decline in support for Fidesz, while Tisza continues to gain traction despite government efforts to bolster its standing through a series of economic measures implemented after three years of stagnation.

According to data released by the Median polling agency and reported by hvg.hu, Tisza has extended its advantage over Fidesz to 20 percentage points among decided voters, compared to a 12-point lead in January.

The party, led by former government official Péter Magyar, now commands the support of 55% of those planning to vote, an increase from 51% in January.

Conversely, support for Fidesz has fallen to 35% from 39% in the previous month, according to the survey conducted between February 18 and February 23.

When considering the entire population, the poll shows Tisza with 42% support and Fidesz with 31%.

Beyond the two leading parties, only the far-right Our Homeland party appears poised to cross the 5% threshold required for parliamentary representation, currently holding 6% support – a 1% increase from January.
