Huub Stapel: Burn-out Makes Actor More Emotional

Dutch actor Huub Stapel, 71, has revealed he finds himself tearing up more easily since recovering from a burn-out, particularly when watching scenes of suffering on television. The veteran performer, known for a decades-long career in Dutch film and television, shared his increased emotional vulnerability in a recent interview with De Telegraaf.

Stapel was forced to take an eight-month break from his work, including stage and screen roles, to recover from the burn-out. “On one day, I got in the car and at some point I looked at the sky and just started to cry uncontrollably,” he recounted in a book by Roos Moggré, as reported by Redactie247. “And it just kept going, for half an hour. That’s when I knew I had to step away for a bit.”

Initially, Stapel preferred to deal with his issues independently, but eventually sought professional help, attending six therapy sessions that aided him in making crucial life decisions. At the time, the actor was also navigating a challenging personal situation, torn between two romantic relationships. “I just couldn’t figure it out,” he said.

The actor’s openness about his experience reflects a growing conversation around mental health, particularly within the entertainment industry, and the challenges of aging in a demanding profession. Despite his increased sensitivity, Stapel remains active in the film world, continuing to surprise audiences and critics with his current projects and personal insights. He is currently working with Toneelgroep Maastricht on the play “Het geluk van Limburg,” according to Notiulti. Stapel is in a relationship with Annemiek and has two sons, Sem (34) and Mas (31).

“When I observe suffering on TV, I’m immediately completely thrown off,” Stapel stated, highlighting the lasting impact of his burn-out on his emotional state. The revelation offers a candid look at the personal toll that a demanding career can take, even on established stars.
