The incident highlights not only the critical need for motorists to exercise caution during winter months, but also the legal duty of commercial drivers to properly secure their loads and ensure road safety.
PELCZYCE – Winter months present some of the most hazardous driving conditions of the year. Roads are frequently slick, and visibility is significantly reduced, especially during heavy snowfall and fog. However, other dangers also lurk for motorists. Falling ice from larger vehicles poses a serious threat.
A terrifying incident unfolded on Route 396 in Pelczyce, a town in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship of Poland, on January 13th. A large piece of ice detached from a passing truck and crashed through the windshield of a car, injuring two people. The incident highlights the potential for serious consequences when drivers fail to properly secure their loads in winter conditions.
Driver Fled the Scene
According to reports, the driver of the car, a 49-year-old man, and his 48-year-old passenger were hospitalized with injuries. Their conditions are currently stable. The ice broke away during a passing maneuver, leaving the front of the BMW looking as if it had been struck by artillery. The truck driver, aware of the incident, reportedly left the scene without stopping.
Police are now searching for the driver. Polish law requires all motorists to ensure their vehicles do not pose a threat to other road users. Failure to do so can result in fines of up to 300,000 zloty (approximately equivalent to the same amount in Euros), and in cases of serious injury, a prison sentence of three to eight years.
The incident underscores the importance of winter road safety and the legal responsibilities of commercial drivers.
“Before every journey, thoroughly remove snow and ice from roofs and trailers. Maintain a safe following distance, especially when driving behind trucks. One second can make the difference between life and death,” police are urging all drivers. Polsat News has more on the ongoing investigation.
