Iga Świątek will begin her competition in the WTA 1000 tournament in Indian Wells in the coming days, an event she has won twice previously. Due to her seeding, she will begin the tournament in the second round, facing the winner of the match between Francesca Jones and Kayla Day. The Polish star arrived in California well ahead of her first match, participating in a charity exhibition event, the Eisenhower Cup, on Wednesday night Polish time, and quickly captured the attention of fans – but not for her performance on the court.
Iga Świątek and Casper Ruud Build a Statement with Unique Eyewear
As she did last year, Casper Ruud partnered with Świątek in the tournament. Before the start of the competition, the participants were officially presented to the public. The crowd was certainly surprised when they saw the Polish-Norwegian duo sporting rather distinctive, large, black sunglasses.
Social media quickly lit up with reactions. “Wait, those glasses, I love them,” “Nice,” and “Iga and Casper in identical glasses…” were among the comments posted on X. It turns out there was a reason for the unusual eyewear. The sunglasses weren’t for vision correction, but contained a hidden camera.
The tournament organizers were behind the idea, and have since published a video on social media showing what fans watching at home see, and what the players see as they walk onto the court. The video showed footage from Ruud’s camera. They also revealed what Świątek said to the Norwegian as they greeted the audience. – “I’m sure everyone is thinking: are they blind, or what’s going on?” – the Polish player joked.
