Oil companies are considering a shift to smaller liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders as nations grapple with supply disruptions, according to reports. The potential move to 10-kilogram cylinders, down from the current 14.2-kilogram size, aims to stretch limited stock and ensure wider distribution amid ongoing challenges.
The consideration comes as conflict-related disruptions to supply chains and decreased imports have created a shortage of LPG. Officials are hoping that by reducing the size of each cylinder, they can reach more households with the available supply. Cylinders would be labeled to indicate the reduced gas volume, and the price would be adjusted accordingly.
Currently, a standard LPG cylinder lasts approximately 35-40 days for typical use. The smaller 10-kilogram cylinders are estimated to last around a month, offering a comparable duration for consumers. This move underscores the growing concern over LPG availability in the region.
Authorities are also cracking down on the commercial use of domestically intended LPG cylinders. Increased inspections are being conducted to prevent hotels, restaurants, and other businesses from utilizing cylinders meant for household needs. Government officials have directed oil companies and distributors to strictly adhere to distribution timelines and other regulations.
